Insurance – animal health

Chapter 55 in Elgar Concise Encyclopedia of Animal Law, 2025, pp 212-214 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Animal health insurance, or pet insurance, is a type of insurance that covers some or all of the costs of veterinary care for an animal. The cost and coverage of animal health insurance vary depending on the type of animal covered and the type of coverage sought. There are two main types of pet insurance policies: (1) accident only, and (2) accident and illness, also called comprehensive. Pet insurance policies often contain multiple exclusions. Despite its growing popularity, pet insurance has been criticized for the cost, refusal to cover pre-existing conditions, waiting times imposed before coverage begins, age restrictions on policy coverage, and long delays for reimbursement. Because of animals’ current status as property, pet insurance is regulated as property and casualty insurance.
