Chapter 56 in Elgar Concise Encyclopedia of Animal Law, 2025, pp 215-217 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Homeowners insurance indemnifies a homeowner for losses or liability occurring from various contingencies and perils. Homeowners insurance is offered worldwide and generally works the same way, although specifics may vary by country and by the policy chosen. A homeowners policy may cover property loss covered by an animal, depending on the type of animal at issue and the specifics of the policy. Loss to real or personal property caused by the insured's pets or other domestic animals are not covered by the typical homeowners policy. Although animals are considered personal property, injury to or loss of a homeowner's animal is not traditionally covered by homeowners insurance. As for liability for injuries caused by animals, coverage again depends on the type of animal and the specifics of the policy. In addition, many homeowners policies exclude, limit coverage, or charge increased rates to cover injuries caused by dog breeds or mixed breeds deemed by an insurance company to be a higher risk than others.
