Law enforcement and search and rescue animals
Katya A. Sargeant
Chapter 62 in Elgar Concise Encyclopedia of Animal Law, 2025, pp 235-238 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Domesticated animals have been used to assist humans in perilous journeys and self-protection for thousands of years, and the instrumentalization of wild animals has become common in more recent times. Whilst animals remain stalwarts in military forces, search and rescue teams, and law enforcement agencies across the world, they are afforded few protections by domestic and international law.
