Animal political parties

Chapter 7 in Elgar Concise Encyclopedia of Animal Law, 2025, pp 26-28 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
In the same way that ‘greens’ parties emerged as a new political movement in the 1970s and 1980s based on environmentalism and social justice, a new wave of ‘animal’ political parties emerged in the 2000s and 2010s with a focus on the protection of non-human animals. There are now animal political parties in over 15 countries. While greens party ideology tends to see animals as part of a broader ecosystem, animal political parties focus on animals as individuals with intrinsic value, worthy of moral consideration and legal protection, and have a particular focus on the rejection of speciesism and anthropocentrism, with compassion as a core concept behind their work. Although animal political parties are still relatively new to the political landscape, they have already have measurable impact.
