Overview of EU animal law
Alice Di Concetto
Chapter 75 in Elgar Concise Encyclopedia of Animal Law, 2025, pp 284-288 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Despite limited competence in the field of animal protection, the EU has adopted an extensive body of animal welfare legislation. EU animal protection legislation covers farm animals, animals used for scientific purposes, wild animals – both living in the wild and in captivity – as well as companion animals. Additionally, in 2009, the EU became one of the few jurisdictions in the world to recognize animal interests in its constitutional treaty.
