Overview of Indian animal law

Sahana Ramdas

Chapter 76 in Elgar Concise Encyclopedia of Animal Law, 2025, pp 289-293 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: India's animal protection laws are expansive and aim to broadly address animal welfare and animal protection issues. The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and its Rules require humane conditions for transport and livestock farming practices. Furthermore, it mandates ethical practices in conducting research on animals used for experiments. India's animal law framework also aims to address cow protection issues, grapples with bull-racing sports, and strives to improve the humane management of street dogs. The Wildlife Protection Act aims to protect well-known wildlife species and makes room for importing CITES-listed species as well. Furthermore, animal law jurisprudence is evolving as Indian courts have passed landmark judgments granting personhood rights to animals.
