Overview of Israeli animal law
Marine Lercier
Chapter 77 in Elgar Concise Encyclopedia of Animal Law, 2025, pp 294-298 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Israel has enacted comprehensive animal protection laws, encompassing animals used for production purposes, working animals, companion animals, wild animals, and animals used for scientific purposes. The Supreme Court has regularly addressed animal welfare and cruelty issues, interpreting these laws with reference to both legal standards and the Hebrew Bible. Significantly, Israel is among the few nations to prohibit the fur trade, foie gras production, cosmetic testing on animals, vivisection in schools, and the use of animals in circuses.
