Overview of Nigerian animal law

Chapter 79 in Elgar Concise Encyclopedia of Animal Law, 2025, pp 303-306 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The Nigerian climate offers viable soil for the development of animal law. Although available legislation is very sparse, Nigeria still has some laws that offer possibilities for the advancement of animal protection. These include the Criminal Code Act with respect to animal cruelty, the Animal Diseases (Control) Act with respect to farmed animals in transport, and the Nigerian Constitution with respect to wildlife. Despite the availability of these laws, there have been no animal cruelty prosecutions to date, although more laws are continually being enacted. Nonetheless, the appointment of a new Minister of State for Environment after the 2023 elections is likely to offer possibilities for a renewed commitment towards intentional efforts at strengthening the animal protection laws in Nigeria.
