Animal sentience, cognition and the law
Lori Marino
Chapter 8 in Elgar Concise Encyclopedia of Animal Law, 2025, pp 29-32 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Evidence of sentience and cognition is the fundamental building block of legal advocacy for animals. Today, concepts and scientific evidence about sentience and cognition in a wide range of animals are becoming increasingly acknowledged and expanded in the areas of invertebrates, shared psychology across humans and animals, and increasing efforts to recognize not just the welfare but the rights of animals. The growing body of scientific evidence of sentience and cognition is making it increasingly difficult to deny protections for animals.
