The #MeToo movement, gender and politics

Abstract: The #MeToo movement is a worldwide social movement that supports survivors of sexual assault and harassment. Although the movement varies by nation, one goal is to create public visibility for what has previously been seen as private hidden traumas. #MeToo has created a sense of collective identity as survivors join together to shed light on the prevalence of gendered violence. The #MeToo movement has also led to accountability for perpetrators. Digital media and social media have spread movement ideology and tactics across the globe. The #MeToo movement has been successful in creating a new consciousness among survivors (who are disproportionately women) and raising public awareness about the ubiquitous nature of sexual assault and harassment. It has also created resistance and backlash among those in power who seek to maintain the status quo.
