 Still engaging from the margins?J. Ann Tickner and Laura Sjoberg Chapter 2 in Handbook on Gender in World Politics, 2026, pp 4-10 from Edward Elgar Publishing Abstract: In the 35 years since feminist theorizing entered the field of international relations (IR), feminist scholarship has proliferated in creative and exciting ways. So, has IR been fundamentally changed by feminist work? And does that remain the goal of feminist work in the field? We would argue that, in spite of Feminist IR's successes and efforts to engage in conversations with both mainstream and other critical approaches, feminist IR remains on the margins of the discipline, although positioned differently than it was at the outset of feminist inquiry. Significant research in the field continues to proceed as if gender is inconsequential to global politics. Citation of feminist work by non-feminists remains limited, and often instrumental. As a result, a number of feminist scholars have recently suggested that perhaps integrating into the mainstream of the field should not be (and is no longer) a goal of feminist work in IR. Rejection of the discipline's constraints can be intellectually freeing, normatively important, and politically meaningful. This chapter discusses the promises and pitfalls of feminist IR's positions in and around the margins of the field understood as IR.
