Abstract: Conflict-related sexual violence (CRSV) remains a widespread and devastating feature of contemporary warfare, as evidenced in diverse contexts ranging from Colombia to Ukraine. This chapter presents key debates and perspectives on the topic, aiming to deepen the understanding of how sex, gender and violence intersect in conflict settings. The chapter is structured in three main sections. The first section explores the evolving definitions and manifestations of CRSV. The second section addresses the question of why CRSV occurs, reviewing a growing body of scholarship that investigates its causes and mechanisms. It identifies four principal analytical approaches in the literature: rationalist, structural, organisational and masculinities-oriented. The final section examines international policy responses aimed at tackling CRSV, outlining emerging themes and discussing how existing literature has engaged with them.
