Chapter 30 in Handbook on Gender in World Politics, 2026, pp 193-199 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The confluence of anti-feminism, violent misogyny and far-right ideologies has emerged as a political phenomenon in its own right and is manifesting itself in ways that are reshaping our understanding of gender in contemporary global politics. With this chapter, we outline some of the key issues in contemporary academic debates of these intersecting dynamics and provide two examples of how they have materialised in recent years. We do so via two paradigmatic figures: the Incel and the Tradwife. First, we address violent misogyny as it is enacted within the so-called manosphere, including its connections to lone wolf far-right terrorists whose motives have been informed partly by anti-women agendas. Second, we highlight the “Tradwife” movement, which leverages influencing tactics on social media to intersperse anti-feminist activism with conservative and ethnonationalist ideas. As both empirical sites testify to the importance of developments in the realm of digital technology and online spaces for the increased prominence and visibility of these politics, we devote attention to unpacking the role of digital media and platform logics in driving these dynamics.
