 Cinema and filmCristina Masters Chapter 39 in Handbook on Gender in World Politics, 2026, pp 259-267 from Edward Elgar Publishing Abstract: This chapter explores cinema and film as critical sites of feminist enquiry into global politics. It offers a reading of two films, Barbie and Oppenheimer, to demonstrate what a feminist analysis might look like and to show the significance of taking seriously cultural productions for thinking critically about the entanglements between gender and global politics. Peeling back superficial aesthetic and affective differences between the two films, the chapter harnesses the portmanteau ‘Barbenheimer’ to reveal what lurks in the shadows, on the margins and between the lines of the two films. It aims to show that we can read Barbie and Oppenheimer as sharing similar colonial foundations and thus as entangled in reproducing white gendered gaze(s) with the effect of making obscure ongoing racialised, colonial and gendered violences. In so doing, it asks readers to locate film and cinema in global relations of power in ways that might provincialise white western cinematic representations to better challenge ongoing colonial relationalities that surface in mundane intimacies such as gender and in the deadly fantasies of white masculinity.
