Abstract: This chapter provides a brief introduction to feminist historical materialism and (neo-)Gramscian critical theory. The purpose of the chapter is to outline some of the theoretical assumptions that inform their understanding of gender as a social power relation. Key to this literature is an emphasis on the necessity of analysing social, political and economic relations as a complex whole, or totality, rather than as separate parts. It provides an overview of how gender inequalities are reproduced through the ongoing devaluation of social reproduction, the prevalence of what Spike Peterson calls ‘masculinism’, and the strategic silence that exists in policy-making and works to conceal the gendered effects of global restructuring.
