Putting an integrated land use transport strategy together

.

Chapter 10 in How Great Cities Happen, 2023, pp 266-292 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This concluding chapter summarises key considerations in putting together an integrated city land use transport plan, from the vital early task of establishing a societal vision and key goals, to give the plan direction, through target setting to the detail of some focus areas for the plan. The scope of such plans is necessarily becoming increasingly broad, as illustrated through case study cities of good practice. Core strategic land use development directions for more compact cities are outlined, with supporting transport directions. These are complemented by ideas to equitably increase urban productivity, enhance social inclusion, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, increase urban greening and biodiversity, with supportive governance arrangements. The urgent need for cities to take integrated action on all the fronts highlighted in this book, taking stock of local circumstances and priorities, is becoming increasingly apparent.
