 Academic entrepreneurship and regional economic development. Chapter 2 in University Entrepreneurial Ecosystems, 2024, pp 13-25 from Edward Elgar Publishing Abstract: The university’s knowledge commercialization activity is represented through a multitude of channels, inclusive of licensing, consultancy, contract research, and academic spinout company formation. The chapter discusses how academic spinout companies are formed, why they are formed, and how they develop. In so doing, it highlights their distinctive character drawing exceptional scholarly attention to spinouts: namely, non-commercial background of the founders, its technology based on the latest university research, ability to attract venture capital finance early on, and high levels of survival, separating them from other types of firms. Through such state-of-the art review, the chapter positions the academic spinout company in the regional economic development processes, specifically examining the current knowledge on the extent of their impact. It introduces the university entrepreneurial ecosystems concept as a lens that enables studying and explaining academic spinout companies, by positioning their existence in complex networks of actors.
