Levels of ecosystems

Chapter 5 in University Entrepreneurial Ecosystems, 2024, pp 53-61 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The distinctive character of university entrepreneurial ecosystems suggests that ecosystems not only co-exist across places, but also within. This importantly presents a conceptual problem, where ecosystems were typically considered as encompassing a specific locality, as singular constructs. The complexity uncovered in the chapter points to a different reality, where a place-based ecosystem is composed of multiple ecosystems, some of which form more independent ecosystems such as university ones. Consequently, the chapter aims to systematize this by offering a taxonomy of sub-ecosystems, which aims to explain the unique existence of university entrepreneurial ecosystems and recognize that other distinctive sub-ecosystems may also be present, such as technology or sector-based. It then explores how these coexist by proposing three models: hierarchical, nested, and hybrid.
