Relocation of academic spinouts: ‘leaky localism’ of university entrepreneurial ecosystems
.
Chapter 8 in University Entrepreneurial Ecosystems, 2024, pp 87-97 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Academic spinout companies are typically portrayed as place-bounded actors, yet emerging evidence suggests a more complex reality. In view of university entrepreneurial ecosystems, the chapter aims to investigate the inter-regional location patterns of academic spinout companies. In so doing, the chapter maps out the spinout companies and their direction of migration across regions. It further examines the push and pull factors that help explain why spinout companies move away from their universities. The findings suggest that the relocation activity cannot be explained by the presence of markets for entrepreneurial finance alone. In conclusion, the chapter discusses the ‘leakiness’ of university entrepreneurial ecosystems and its consequences for the regional economic development, including the missed direct economic impacts primarily characterized in unrealized local employment and spending, and a development of indirect benefits such as cross-regional networks.
