Boundaries of ecosystems
.
Chapter 9 in University Entrepreneurial Ecosystems, 2024, pp 98-108 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
As the actors in university entrepreneurial ecosystems form networks that are not only intra-regional but also inter-regional, it is critical to address this undertheorized space. Specifically, the chapter begins with stating the conceptual problems arising from the current closed-boundaries model of entrepreneurial ecosystems. It discusses what boundaries the ecosystems may exhibit, in particular, by observing the composition and configuration of university entrepreneurial ecosystems. The chapter proposes a taxonomy of ecosystem boundaries and illuminates the methodological issues for ecosystems research. The conclusion offers policy implications, especially aimed at the local and central policymakers with a pledge to recognize that in designing policy interventions a more flexible understanding of the ecosystems should be applied.
