The ‘other’ in academia: the mental health of women in masculinized institutions in Central and Eastern Europe

Abstract: Mental health in academics has been extensively studied, but rarely from the perspective of gender. Although some researchers have investigated the topic, there is no consensus on whether or not stress affects male and female academics differently. Most of the literature is based on quantitative and ostensibly objective criteria, without input from academics themselves. This study highlights the views of 53 female academics at various stages of their careers at universities in Central and Eastern Europe. Their testimonials depict academia as a gendered and gendering institution, in which females remain the ‘other’ and males the norm.
