Chapter 19 in Research Handbook of Academic Mental Health, 2024, pp 307-324 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Doctoral students are faced with many challenges throughout the pursuit of their degrees. In addition to clear intellectual challenges that accompany their quest for expertise, doctoral students are also confronted with widespread mental health and wellbeing challenges that are associated with both university factors, such as the supervisory relationship and departmental socialization, and personal factors, such as work-life balance and academic motivation. These stressors were intensified during the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in the dampening of many students’ wellbeing. The present chapter reviews recent literature on the university factors and personal factors that have been empirically demonstrated to shape the mental health and wellbeing of doctoral students, as well as literature on the unique effects of the COVID-19 context on these students.
