Conclusion: worldwide challenges for subnational governance

Ricardo A. Bello-Gómez and Claudia N. Avellaneda

Chapter 27 in Handbook on Subnational Governments and Governance, 2024, pp 393-399 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Amid the vast diversity of institutional, socio-economic and cultural differences between subnational governments around the world, these governments face a set of common challenges to their survival and consolidation. This concluding chapter outlines challenges for subnational governance and categorize them within administrative, fiscal and political dimensions. Administrative challenges mainly deal with the issue of building and sustaining government capacity. Fiscal challenges relate to different strategies for securing financial resources for performance. Political challenges address the interactions of subnational governments with a broad variety of actors, including national governments, the private and non-profit sector and the general public, among others. We conclude by proposing certain themes to advance a research agenda.
