Chapter 1 in Understanding Fiscal Decentralization, 2025, pp 1-12 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Fiscal decentralization (FD) has been a dynamic feature of economic development processes. This book provides a review of the theoretical and empirical FD literatures, tracing their advancements that align with macroeconomic paradigm shifts. With the aim of providing policy lessons for the effective implementation of FD in support of economic development, this book explores its welfare implications by focusing on recent evidence and its interactions with various structural and institutional characteristics.
