Empirical evidence on fiscal decentralization
Bilin Neyapti ()
Chapter 4 in Understanding Fiscal Decentralization, 2025, pp 64-113 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter first presents the global state and trends of fiscal decentralization, measured by its expenditure, revenue and vertical imbalance aspects. Using data from the 2000s, it then conducts a standard benchmark regression to analyze the relationship between key macroeconomic variables and these indicators of fiscal decentralization. Finally, it reviews the main lessons emerging from recent empirical literature on these relationships, primarily focusing on panel studies while also addressing some special cases.
