Abstract: The opening chapter introduces the book and summarizes each of the chapters. It places the book’s context in historic context. In addition, recent trends in hate, hate crimes, and the study of these are presented and discussed. Specific trends that are identified and discussed. First, there has been an increase in rightwing hate and hate crimes since the early years of the 21st century. Second, the rhetoric of hate as well as the targets for hate are increasing similar cross-nationally. Third, hate groups have been using the Internet to spread hate and recruit members to their cause since the earliest stages of the Internet, but these efforts have increased lately and this has resulted in increasing amounts of online hate. Finally, scholars and law enforcement officials continue to face challenges that hamper our understanding of and attempts to combat hate.
