Chapter 4 in Rethinking Spatial Inequality, 2025, pp 86-106 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
In this first of four substantive chapters, we focus on socioeconomic disparities, the central domain by which the concept of spatial inequality has been understood and studied. We apply arguments made in the anchoring chapters to the case of poverty, a common marker of these disparities. Extensive research exists on the territorial dimensions of poverty, but it has limitations. Moving forward our discussion of the forces reproducing spatial inequalities (in Chapter 3), we advance a conceptual framework centered on poverty at the subnational scale across localities. By scrutinizing poverty as a domain of well-being, we offer an example of how we might bridge perspectives on social stratification among populations and perspectives on uneven development, and show how existing research can be improved with an enhanced spatial inequality approach.
