Abstract:
In the closing chapter, we consolidate and extend our arguments on rethinking the concept of spatial inequality and how it is studied. In Chapter 8, we revisit and emphasize the importance of moving forward by promoting greater interchange between long-standing traditions, nurturing new cross-fertilizations, and developing a better understanding of subnational inequality through the interrogation of multi-scalar processes and the recognition of the potential trans-scale relevance of theories and societal forces. In outlining steps to move forward, we draw from lessons learned in addressing the four substantive domains of inequality highlighted in this book. We advance an integrative spatial inequality framework to overcome current fragmentation as well as to provide new insights into place and population disparities. In this way, spatial inequality could be recast beyond an umbrella of diffuse studies toward a more unified and coherent research area that would pave the way for an emancipatory field.
