Circumspection as a process of responsible appropriation of AI

Abstract: This chapter analyses organizational decisions during the initial phase of exploratory and tentative deployment - or “circumspection” - of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. The account is based on a two-year qualitative case study from a public sector organization that is responsible for disbursement of public funds as well as for auditing the disbursement. The account highlights how decisions relating to AI were intertwined with strengthening the organization’s own decision-making capabilities and learning about errors and fraud in use of public funds. Through this the organization’s ability to model and monitor the problem domain and utilize the results of its audit processes were strengthened. While AI technology and its capabilities are significant, we should also pay attention to how the organizational capabilities, both pre-existing and novel evolve and are impacted when organizations engage with AI technologies This chapter contributes to understanding how artificial intelligence technologies can be responsibly adopted and embedded into organization.
