Responsible AI governance: from ideation to implementation

Patrick Mikalef

Chapter 7 in Research Handbook on Artificial Intelligence and Decision Making in Organizations, 2024, pp 126-142 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Artificial Intelligence (AI) has created unprecedented opportunities to business, but at the same time introduced the requirement for responsibility over how these technologies and governed and used. Responsible AI has emerged as an overarching term to describe a set of guiding propositions about AI ought to be managed. Nevertheless, despite a plethora of reports and documents highlighting the principles that AI should be built on, to date there is a lack of knowledge concerning how such principles translate into concrete actions in practice. This chapter aims to survey the current body of literature around responsible AI and highlight some of the key challenges we face in translating such principles into governance practices. Based on this discussion, a conceptual overview is drawn of the broader ecosystem in which responsible AI governance is enacted. The chapter concludes with highlighting some key themes of future challenges and opportunities for research.
