Human resources: the key to institutional economics after the Great Recession
.
Chapter 11 in Reforming Capitalism for the Common Good, 2022, pp 144-156 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter surveys the emergence, evolution, and contemporary relevance of human resource economics, a policy-oriented research field championed by institutionalist Vernon Briggs and grounded in the work of John R. Commons. It also argues that drawing on such work - which puts the attention of economics squarely on workers' capacities, contributions, and well-being - provides a useful starting point for institutionalist research in the aftermath of the Great Recession.
