Social security: a view from beyond the beltway

.

Chapter 7 in Reforming Capitalism for the Common Good, 2022, pp 93-97 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter presents the findings of a civic engagement project organized to explore alternatives and consequences regarding the future of retirement security in the United States. Broadly compatible with the sort of advisory committees favored by John R. Commons to address economic problems, the project panel expressed deep concerns about the proposals of President George W. Bush's Commission to Strengthen Social Security (including the redirection of a portion of payroll taxes to individual retirement accounts) and revealed a sharp gap between the thinking of many policymakers and ordinary citizens. The panel also highlighted the need for - and value of - a thoughtful national discussion on public policies affecting retirement.
