Doing it right? Interpretive research in an era of research ethics review

Deborah K. van den Hoonaard

Chapter 29 in Handbook of Interpretive Research Methods in the Social Sciences, 2025, pp 456-470 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter explores ethical dimensions of conducting interpretive research. It identifies how ethical principles impinge on interpretive research and discusses the ethical poise researchers need to think about these issues. Just as interpretive research is emergent so, too, are the ethical dimensions that apply as research develops. The chapter also identifies the challenges of carrying out interpretive research in light of the biomedical approach of many research-ethics review regimes and the decline of ethical thinking resulting from too much emphasis on compliance with research-ethics policies. Finally, it proposes the development of a research-ethics covenant through which the principles of ethical research would become an integral part of research education in the social sciences and would, thereby, become instilled in interpretive researchers’ approach to their craft.
