Chapter 33 in Handbook of Interpretive Research Methods in the Social Sciences, 2025, pp 512-526 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
In our chapter, we give an overview of Martina Löw's groundbreaking approach to a sociology of space, before discussing three of her empirical studies rooted within interpretive sociology. Following Löw's main research topics over the past decades, we will illustrate how spatial analyses can prove useful for the interpretation of society when using studies on sex work, on the intrinsic logic of cities, and, most recently, on the topic of refigured mediatization as examples. After a brief introduction to the sociology of space, we move on to contextualize its key concepts within the interpretive paradigm and outline the methodology employed to operationalize it for empirical data collection. Overall, we intend to show how spatial theory offers relevant insights into the production of meaning.
