Enter 6G and the augmented smart city

.

Chapter 6 in Rethinking Smart Cities, 2022, pp 109-126 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The 5G technology has brought significant impacts in the wireless connectivity dimensions but the prospect of 6G technology that is anticipated in the coming years is expected to prompt a total revolution on mobile connectivity. It is anticipated that it will bring ground-breaking advancement on how cities across the globe are planned, designed and managed. Coupling this with Augmented Reality technologies it is anticipated that it will give the Smart City concept the impetus it requires to reach full maturity. Already, with 4G and 5G technologies, smart cities have gained traction, and the speed of over 1 Terabyte promised in the 6G will make it possible for massive data transfer; hence making it possible to partially overcome data challenges like storage, but more importantly, it will make it possible to integrate other emerging technologies such as Digital Twins, Immersive Realities, and others in the urban planning realm. Such prospects are addressed in this chapter.
