Rethinking sport and the digital society with Yupei Zhao

Elizabeth C.J. Pike ()

Chapter 10 in Rethinking Sport and Society, 2025, pp 102-111 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Esports may be a controversial choice for inclusion in a book on rethinking sports and society, both in terms of whether they meet the definition of what constitutes a sport and also the stigmatisation of such activities in relation to perceptions surrounding the well-being of the players. However, this chapter presents a rethinking of esports from the perspective of an expert in the field, who draws attention to the progress that has been made in relation to the stigma of being an esports participant, the significant investment of some governments who recognise the diplomatic potential of the activities, and the growth of esports into a multi-billion-dollar industry. These developments demonstrate how esports may be crucial to any future rethinking of sports and society in the digital age of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
