Rethinking sport and the new world with Deqa Niamkey
Elizabeth C.J. Pike ()
Chapter 11 in Rethinking Sport and Society, 2025, pp 112-121 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
In her rethinking of sport for what she calls ‘the new world’, Deqa Niamkey, a Swiss-Somalian, challenges the status quo of the structure and organisation of sport, which has been grounded in the ideas of a generation born and raised prior to the digital age and primarily from the Global North. She challenges those leading sport to consider the views of Generation Z and Generation Alpha to ensure that the future of sport remains relevant to their lives. She also invites us to look to emerging countries from whom much can be learnt about alternative priorities for sport and new ways of dealing with societal challenges. Niamkey draws on vast experience working across multiple international sport organisations, in various countries, to convincingly argue that sport is fundamental to human society.
