Chapter 2 in Rethinking Sport and Society, 2025, pp 11-22 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This opening thematic chapter of the rethinking of sport and society explores the consequences of what has been called The Great Sport Myth, which is the idea that sport is inherently pure and good. This chapter draws on a conversation with one of the world's leading scholars in the understanding of the role of sport in society, whose ideas lay the foundations for some of the specific issues that form the basis of subsequent chapters. This includes a discussion regarding sports that are participant-oriented, the influence of commercialism and government interventions in sport, the role of neoliberalism with regards to access and inclusion in sport, and the need for greater public intellectualism.
