Rethinking sport, disability, diversity and equity with Miki Matheson PLY

Elizabeth C.J. Pike ()

Chapter 3 in Rethinking Sport and Society, 2025, pp 23-33 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: WeThe15 is a global movement to challenge dominant attitudes and discrimination against persons with disabilities, who represent 15 per cent of the global population. Key to the movement is the potential for sport to create more opportunities and increase inclusion. A driving force behind this movement is Paralympian Miki Matheson, who lives with an acquired spinal cord injury and has experienced the stigma of a visible disability, and who has advocated for changes to governance, media coverage, financial investment, and the education system to enhance opportunities for people living with disabilities. Her work advances theoretical understandings of medical, social, and human rights approaches to disability, and she argues convincingly for disability rights and ‘nothing about us without us’, particularly for those who are most marginalised by ableist ideologies.
