Rethinking sport, power and responsibility with Khalida Popal
Elizabeth C.J. Pike ()
Chapter 5 in Rethinking Sport and Society, 2025, pp 46-57 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The United Nations has identified migration as one of the major demographic changes facing the world in the twenty-first century (United Nations, 2020). This chapter recounts the experiences of Khalida Popal, an Afghanistan refugee, who has lived as a forced migrant on two separate occasions and, at the time of her interview, was living as a stateless person. She considers the role of sport for those whose lives are impacted by significant changes to political regimes in the country where they live and those who seek asylum in other parts of the world. Involvement in sport simultaneously presents challenges and danger, while also offering escape, solace, and the potential for integration into a new community. Popal has personally used sport as a form of activism, establishing her own organisation for women and girls in sport, and challenging senior officials in FIFA. She offers insights from these lived experiences for a rethinking of sport, power, and responsibility.
