Rethinking sport and global citizenship with Louisa Wall
Elizabeth C.J. Pike ()
Chapter 6 in Rethinking Sport and Society, 2025, pp 58-67 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
‘Turangawaewae’ is a Māori term for having a place to stand in the world, where individuals feel empowered and connected to their environment and others. In this chapter, Louisa Wall, a Māori whose career spans national politics and high-performance sports in Aotearoa New Zealand, invites us to reconsider sport and society through the lens of Māori values. These values emphasise creating a sense of belonging and taking responsibility for the global community. Wall argues that this approach to sport fosters connection, transcends traditional social hierarchies, and cultivates a sense of global citizenship for the public good.
