Rethinking sport and sustainable development with Vincent Gaillard

Elizabeth C.J. Pike ()

Chapter 8 in Rethinking Sport and Society, 2025, pp 79-92 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, agreed in 2015, witnessed the first time a policy for global development made reference to the important role that sport might play in the realisation of development, peace, empowerment, inclusion, health, and education. Vincent Gaillard spoke to these goals from the perspective of someone who has considerable expertise in sport embracing corporate, human rights, and environmental agendas. He outlined the complexity of balancing political, commercial, and environmental priorities, and the need to bring multiple stakeholders together to try to rethink the regulation of sport in the interests of human rights and sustainable development.
