Practical leadership in global air transport

Benjamin Goodheart and Nicklas Dahlstrom

Chapter 11 in Research Handbook on Air Transport Leadership and Governance, 2025, pp 159-177 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter takes a practical, applied view of leadership in air transportation. Here, you will find a series of international case studies that illustrate the need for wide-ranging and flexible – and culturally informed – leadership in a globalised air transport industry. The discussion that follows also considers how leadership styles can support or stifle innovation in an industry that demands it. We discuss examples of such leadership in the context of airlines, airports, and ground support operations from around the world. Each example illustrates how pragmatic leadership, management, and the organisational systems that support them adapt to the multicultural landscape and quickly shifting technologies and economics of air transport.
