Unpacking a success story: institutional governance work of the state and constructing a unique governance structure for Turkish airlines (1990–2006)

Akansel Yalçınkaya

Chapter 6 in Research Handbook on Air Transport Leadership and Governance, 2025, pp 71-82 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: In this chapter, a unique case study on the governance mechanisms of Turkish Airlines between 1990 and 2006 is constructed. Research on the recent rise and success of Turkish Airlines ignores the airline's unique governance structure and attributes success to individual managers. In contrast, this chapter constructs a narrative of how the governance structure that played a critical role in the rise of Turkish Airlines was realised as an institutional work and shows how the privatisation of Turkish Airlines led to an unintended consequence.
