Air transport governance in the context of a small island state: Cyprus

Sotiroula Liasidou and Kosmas Pipyros

Chapter 7 in Research Handbook on Air Transport Leadership and Governance, 2025, pp 83-100 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The chapter considers the case of Cyprus as a Small Island State (SIS) with air transport services to be of notable importance. Airline governance has changed since the island entered the European Union in 2004. Deregulation came into effect and led to many opportunities for the air transport sector. The chapter reviews how air transport governance takes place by thoroughly understanding business roles and their impact on economic and social levels. Island states prioritise viable airline industry performance since it is the country's most important mode of transport. The government, airline investors, and airport administrators must ensure that air transportation is competitive. During turbulent economic and social situations, the role of air transport governance is especially a determinant of resilience and socio-economic recovery.
