Joshua Yindenaba Abor, Benjamin Agyeman and Mary Wamaitha

Chapter 2 in Sustainable and Responsible Investment in Developing Markets, 2023, pp 12-35 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Sustainable and Responsible Investment (SRI) is an important area which focuses on taking Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) issues into consideration in investment decisions. There are different motivations for SRI which include personal values and goals, institutional mission, and the demands of clients, constituents or plan participants. This chapter takes a look at what SRI is all about by identifying the various forms of SRI, including Ethical Investing, Socially Responsible Investing, Environmental, Social and Governance issues, Sustainable Investing, Green Investment, Impact Investing and Shareholder Engagement. It discusses the evolution and principles of SRI. The UN launched the six Principles for Responsible Investment in 2006, to which signatories committed themselves. The chapter also covers SRI strategies, value creation of responsible investment, determining the size of SRI market and SRI in emerging markets.
