Chapter 11 in Power, Pain and Professional Cycling, 2024, pp 180-183 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: In this short afterword some insights which were brought to light in this book and how they might contribute to figurational sociology are expanded upon. It includes a wider explanation for the stigmatisation of doping in the 1960s as a derivative of a wider ‘moral panic’ about drugs in society. A further contention is that several of the book’s chapters read in combination, provide a visual map for illustrating how civilising processes are multi-level, involving a balance of movements and counter-movements.
