Sexual and reproductive health and rights, climate, environment and co-existence in Madagascar

Abstract: Climate change is arguably the biggest global health threat of the 21st century, able to erase most of the gains that have been made in past decades. Action-research presented in this chapter reviews the links between climate change, gender equality and sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) and considers how SRHR outcomes can help reduce the effects of climate change and environmental degradation. The main sections of the chapter describe a cross-sector integrated population, health and environment (PHE) programme in Madagascar, which seeks to address SRHR challenges, strengthen community resilience to cyclones, and bolster fishing stocks through community-based marine conservation measures. Concluding, the authors reflect on the opportunities and broader impacts of such cross-sector programmes and the lessons learned. The disproportionate burden of climate change on women suggests that addressing SRHR is an enabler for effective climate and environmental adaptation or resilience programmes.
