A framework for the Chinese strategic mind

.

Chapter 3 in The Chinese Strategic Mind, 2024, pp 53-103 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter presents a framework comprehending the Chinese strategic mindset, encompassing six fundamental components: Tao, stratagem, Shi, dialectic, competitor orientation, and agility. Tao serves as the basis of Chinese strategy, while Shi embodies a typical approach to strategy formation in Chinese culture. The utilisation of stratagem is deeply rooted in Chinese culture, and dialectic is primarily shaped by the I Ching and Taoism. Additionally, competitor orientation and agility are distinctively Chinese traits to a significant extent. These components are underpinned by the Chinese language, philosophical system, and holistic thinking.
