Chapter 13 in Assessing the Social Impact of Immigration in Europe, 2023, pp 218-236 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter focuses on labour market immigrant integration challenges and policies in rural and mountainous regions of Norway and Sweden. Through our comparative study, based on the case regions Midt-Gudbrandsdal and Nord-Østerdal in Norway and Dalarna County in Sweden, we describe and discuss structural conditions and policies that can inform immigrants’ transition to employment. Our data draw primarily on interviews with a variety of stakeholders involved in immigrant integration in the case regions. The findings suggest that a great hindrance to immigrants’ employment in the case regions is the lack of structural mechanisms for mapping their informal qualifications and the verification of their formal education. Additionally, the lack of language proficiency raises the threshold for entrance into the labour market. Our data further reveal that case regions’ dispersed settlement and transport facilities have implications for labour market integration.
